Barefoot Doctors were people from within a community who received basic medical and acupuncture training in order to provide preventive health care, family planning, public health measures and basic health care to rural populations as part of Mao’s Cultural Revolution (1960’s China). These practitioners were almost always farmers who worked in the rice paddies (barefoot) alongside their patients. They were trained by the government in programs varying in length from six to eighteen months. The use of low tech, low cost medicine afforded health care to areas that were previously not served or underserved. Many barefoot doctors went on to get more training in various health care fields, as did Chen Zhu, China’s current Minister of Health.
It is in this vein, making health care affordable and available to most everyone, that I offer acupuncture for $15-35 and visceral manipulation $20-50 per treatment.
